Rock climbing at Castle Rock, Lakes 19th Sept 2009
A view of Castle Rock of Triermain, near Thirlmere in the English Lake District. The North Face lies on the left side of the crag and the south face on the right.
Climbed Overhanging Bastion with Donny McLeod. I led the first pitch which is full of interest. A steep wall leads eventually to a tricky corner, finishing on a fine ledge in the middle of the face.
First pitch comes in at 4c. Donny then led off up the second pitch....above.
The crux is a slabby section leading onto the amazing ramp that diagonals across the overhanging face. The crux is probably 5a.
Eventually the ramp peters out just before the end of the second pitch and you have to swing left onto the hanging face rather sensationally. Fortunately, the handholds are great!!
Donny on the second stance. From here easier climbing leads out onto the summit of the crag. We finished in drizzly rain, but the overhanging nature of the face had kept things dry for us.
Time for a beer!! So we headed to Waterhead, a canoe trip and a beer to follow.
