Joe's Valley Ice Climbs 17 Jan 2011

Left Park City in pouring rain, looked at water peeing down the climbs at Provo Canyon, drove over Soldier summit to Price where the temperature was 50F!! Decided to make the detour to Joe's Valley on the east rain shadow side of the Wasatch Plateau. Good decision. Ice climbing on soft ice in dry weather, albeit rather warm. Started out with Chris leading the first big pitch on CCC Gully (WI4). Unfortunately the second pitch was not complete.

Then had a nice wee break in the sun and some lunch....................

..........before heading up to check out Donorcicle, which unfortunately had two big cracks in it and looked unsafe..................

.........before heading up Cox's Swale to climb a.k.a. Deadbolt. Here James leads the main pitch.

Chris following the same pitch.

The route followed the streambed through mutiple short pitches all of which we soloed.

An unexpected bonus to get on the ice today as it really had looked a no hoper in the morning.
Finished the day by having dinner at Green River and taking a motel at Grand Junction, Colorado.
